Livestock

With up to 300 cattle, 800 sheep and 100 goats the Monmouthshire Show boasts an impressive display of livestock from across the regions. Many animals have already graced the rings of other County and Royal Shows and proved themselves to be amongst the top livestock in the country.

As an open show the Monmouthshire Show caters for most breeds of cattle, with the Commercial Beef classes being especially popular and the Any Other Breed classes attracting some of the rarer animals not often seen by the general public. The Monmouthshire Show has been chosen by The Welsh Longhorn Breeders Club to be their official Autumn Show.

A short description and history of the breeds appears in the Official Show Programme and Catalogue.
The committee of the Monmouthshire Show are grateful to the owners and handlers of the magnificent animals attending the show for the effort that they put in to display their livestock in top class condition. These animals are well worth a visit for those not familiar with a close up view of some of our many and varied breeds of cattle, sheep and goats.

Regrettably it is the livestock section of the show that suffers the most with the seemingly constant threats of Foot and Mouth, TB, and Blue Tongue to name but a few hardships that appear to constantly cast a black cloud over farming. Over the decades several shows have had to go ahead without this section and even been cancelled altogether due to countrywide animal movement restrictions. Nevertheless any measures put upon us by DEFRA are managed without fuss to enable centuries of tradition to continue.
