Chairman's Message

Mr John Biggs

Chairman 18/03/2008

Welcome to the Monmouthshire Show website.

On behalf of our Society, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the historic 2007 Monmouthshire Show. A red letter day in our history because, after 60 years of the Show being held on the picturesque Vauxhall Fields, we have moved to this beautiful permanent site adjoining the River Wye in the most scenic of settings.

The Show has a very long history. Mention of the Monmouth Agricultural Society can be found first in 1794; in 1841 a Ploughing Match was held in Wyesham and in 1857, again at Wyesham, the first show to hold livestock as well as ploughing and hedging. It is, perhaps, fitting that 150 years later we celebrate by holding the first modern era Show on, maybe, the same land!

The decision to purchase the new show site was a careful judgement made by the Management Committee to ensure the future of this Show, which is considered a vital Shop Window for Agriculture and the Countryside as well as providing a substantial input into the Monmouth economy.

A tremendous amount of voluntary work has been undertaken by both members and non-members to transform the ground from the intensive potato growing land when it was purchased 3 years ago to the beautiful pasture of today. Expressing a big thank you is hardly adequate for the many hours of hard work. Space does not permit me to refer to the individuals, or firms, but those concerned will know to whom I am referring and how grateful we are.

For our future plans, we hope to build a storage shed, subject to a current planning application. To this end, we have recently launched the 2007 Development Fund. Details of this appeal by either loan or gift and/or membership of the Society may be obtained from the Membership Marquee adjacent to the Members’ Pavilion by the Main Ring. May I take this opportunity to encourage those who are not members to join our Society even if you are unable to support the Appeal Fund.

These then are exciting times for the Monmouthshire Show Society. We hope that the planning and layout of the Show on the new site proves successful. Above all, I hope everyone has a most enjoyable day. Thank you for your valued support.
